This is the question almost every family asks, and there is no right answer. We look at quality of life — whether your pet is experiencing more difficult days than good ones, whether they can still do the things that brought them joy, and whether they’re in pain that can’t be managed. We’re happy to talk through what you’re seeing before you make any decisions.

We’ll arrive at your home and take a few minutes to meet you and your pet before anything else happens. Once everyone is settled, we will give your pet a sedative injection that will gently put them into a deep, peaceful sleep — they will be comfortable and unaware. After we’ve confirmed they’re completely at rest, we’ll administer the final medication. The whole process is quiet and calm. Most families find it more peaceful than expected.

Absolutely! We encourage it. You can hold your pet, talk to them, play their favorite music, have their favorite blanket nearby. This is your goodbye. We’re just here to make sure it is a gentle one.

Some families choose to have their other animals present; others prefer to keep them in a separate room. Either is completely fine. Animals do grieve, and in some cases, allowing them to be present can actually help with their own process. We’re happy to talk through what might feel right for your household.

At this time, we only focus on dogs and cats. We’ll do our best to help or point you in the right direction if you have another animal.

We recommend reaching out as soon as you think you might be approaching this decision — even if you are not sure yet. We can often accommodate appointments the same week, and having a plan in place can feel like a relief even before you need it.

Dr. Amelia continues to provide medical care to a local animal shelter four days a week.

If you’ve chosen cremation, we will transport your pet the same day. If you’ve chosen home burial, we’ll leave you with guidance on how to proceed.
